Spark and The Thao Dien International School Community
About the Community
Thao Dien is not just a neighborhood. For international school families in Ho Chi Minh City, it is the center of gravity. Within a radius of roughly two kilometers from Spark English Center, there are more international and bilingual schools per square kilometer than anywhere else in Vietnam.
Spark was built in Thao Dien, for Thao Dien families, because this is where the need is most concentrated and most specific. We are not a chain that happened to open a branch here. We are a specialist English center that exists because the international school community in this neighborhood needs something that the broader English center market does not provide: small-class, curriculum-aligned, academically rigorous English support delivered within walking distance of the schools where these children spend their days.
The Thao Dien School Cluster
British International School HCMC (BIS)
Location: 225 Nguyen Van Huong, Thao Dien. Curriculum: British (IGCSE, A-Levels), part of Nord Anglia Education. Approximately 1,800 students from 50+ nationalities.
English demands: BIS follows the British curriculum with structured assessment through IGCSE and A-Levels. Academic English requirements are high from Year 3 onward, with extended writing, reading comprehension, and analytical thinking central to the assessment framework.
Where Spark helps: Students in EAL who need faster progress. Students preparing for IGCSE English. Students whose writing has plateaued at B1. Students who need IELTS for university applications alongside A-Level work.
International School of Ho Chi Minh City (ISHCMC)
Location: 28 Vo Truong Toan, An Phu Ward. Curriculum: IB (PYP, MYP, DP), one of the longest-established IB World Schools in Vietnam. 1,200+ students from 50+ nationalities.
English demands: The IB's inquiry-based approach places heavy demands on academic English: students must read critically, write analytically, and express complex ideas orally from early in the MYP. IB English Language and Literature at DP level requires C1 English.
Where Spark helps: Students transitioning from PYP to MYP who need stronger academic writing. Students preparing for IB English. Students whose English is conversationally strong but academically behind.
European International School HCMC (EIS)
Location: 730 F-G-K Le Van Mien, Thao Dien. Curriculum: IB (PYP, MYP, DP) in a smaller, village-style campus.
Where Spark helps: Similar profile to ISHCMC families. The smaller school environment means less EAL resource internally, which makes outside support more relevant for students who need it.
Australian International School Saigon (AIS)
Location: 36 Thao Dien Road (Thao Dien campus), plus Thu Thiem and Xi campuses. Curriculum: Australian pathway with IGCSE and IB Diploma options. 1,100+ students from 40+ nationalities.
Where Spark helps: Students navigating the IGCSE/IB pathway choice who need English strong enough for either option. Students at the Thao Dien campus who need after-school support within the neighborhood.
Aurora International School
Location: 11-13 Tran Ngoc Dien, Thao Dien. Curriculum: Reggio Emilia-inspired early years, New Zealand curriculum for primary and middle school.
Where Spark helps: Children transitioning from Reggio-inspired early years into structured primary. Families preparing for a transition to BIS, ISHCMC, or another school at Year 7. Children who need systematic phonics development.
EtonHouse International Pre-School Thao Dien
Location: 42 Street 10, Thao Dien. Curriculum: Reggio Emilia-inspired, IB PYP candidate.
Where Spark helps: Phonics and early literacy development before or alongside the transition to primary school. Children who need structured reading and writing foundations.
Other schools in the wider District 2 and Thu Duc area
Beyond the Thao Dien core, we serve families from the American School (TAS), BVIS, Anne Hill, Saint Ange, La Petite Ecole, Saigon Star, Renaissance, ABC International School, and the network of bilingual schools across District 2 including Vinschool and Asian School campuses.
Why a Single Specialist Center Beats a Chain With Branches
There is a reason Spark has one center in Thao Dien and not five branches across HCMC. The reason is quality control.
When an English center opens multiple branches, it needs to staff them. That means hiring more teachers, often at speed, often accepting a lower qualification threshold. The curriculum gets diluted as new staff interpret it differently. Quality varies between branches, and parents have no way to know which branch is strong and which is stretched.
Spark operates differently. We have one location, one teaching team, one consistent standard. Every student is taught by the same small group of specialist teachers. Every parent can speak directly to the director. Every class runs at the same standard because there is no second location where standards might slip.
Our center at 204B7/12 Nguyen Van Huong is within walking distance or a short drive of every school listed above. For most Thao Dien families, the commute is less than ten minutes.
FAQs
What Thao Dien Families Ask us Most
Q: My child goes to BIS/ISHCMC/AIS. Do they really need outside English support?
A: Sometimes yes, sometimes no. International schools have excellent EAL programs, but those programs serve large numbers of children with diverse needs. If your child has been in EAL for more than a year and progress has slowed, or if their academic English is not keeping pace with curriculum demands, outside support is worth investigating. Our free assessment gives you an honest answer. We have turned families away when school EAL alone was sufficient.
Q: We just moved to Thao Dien. My child starts at BIS/ISHCMC next term. What should we do now?
A: Book an assessment immediately. The window between arriving in HCMC and starting at a new school is the most valuable time for English preparation. We run intensive bridging programs designed for this exact situation.
Q: My child is at a bilingual school. Is Spark for international school families only?
A: No. We serve families from bilingual schools (Vinschool, VAS, Asian School, Wellspring, and others) across HCMC. The English needs are different: bilingual school families typically need stronger academic English to complement what the school provides, and many are preparing for a future transition to an international school or for IELTS.
Q: We live in District 7. Is it worth the commute to Thao Dien?
A: For some families, yes. If the structural advantages of Spark matter enough to justify a 25-to-40 minute commute, the fit can be worth the travel. For families where convenience is a higher priority, we would honestly suggest looking at options closer to home. Better to attend consistently at a good local center than to attend inconsistently at a distant specialist one.
Q: Where exactly is Spark located?
A: 204B7/12 Nguyen Van Huong, Thao Dien Ward, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. We are on the main Nguyen Van Huong road, within walking distance of BIS and the surrounding residential developments.
Q: What are Spark's operating hours?
A: Classes run Monday through Saturday. Most after-school sessions run from 3:00 PM to 8:30 PM on weekdays, with morning and afternoon sessions on Saturdays. We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate the varied dismissal times of different international schools.
Q: Do you coordinate with my child's school?
A: We work alongside schools, not against them. Our teachers are familiar with the curricula at BIS, ISHCMC, EIS, AIS, and the bilingual schools. We do not contact schools directly unless a parent asks us to, but we welcome parents sharing our progress reports with their child's school teacher.
Q: How do I get started?
A: Book a free assessment at sparkvn.com/Assessment. The assessment takes 60 to 90 minutes, provides a detailed profile of your child's English across five skill areas, and includes a recommendation for program and placement. There is no obligation to enroll.
