How Spark Started

Spark was founded in 2019 in Thao Dien with a simple observation: too many children at good schools were still struggling with English.
Not because they lacked ability. Because nobody had taken the time to find the specific gap and close it properly.
Parents were spending money on large-class centers where their child was one of twenty. Or cycling through private tutors who helped with homework but never built the underlying skills. Progress was slow, inconsistent, or invisible. Spark was built to fix that.
We started with a small group of students and one clear principle: assess first, teach second. Find out exactly where a child is. Build a plan around what they actually need. Keep the class small enough that the teacher can see every mistake, correct every misunderstanding, and celebrate every step forward.
That principle has not changed. Today, Spark serves students from over a dozen international and bilingual schools across Ho Chi Minh City, from early phonics learners to IELTS candidates preparing for international university admissions.

Director and Lead IELTS Instructor
Joe Evans is the Director and lead IELTS instructor at Spark English Center Vietnam. He holds an MBA and an MS in Quantitative Sciences from Texas Tech University, along with a TEFL Masters Certification with advanced specializations in Business English and English for Young Learners.
With over six years at Spark and deep experience across every age group and proficiency level, from Pre-K phonics learners to adult IELTS candidates, Joe has built a structured, results-driven approach to English instruction that sets the center apart. He specializes in Academic IELTS, with a particular focus on the two skills Vietnamese students find most challenging: Writing and Speaking.
His track record speaks clearly: over 95% of his IELTS students achieve Band 7.5 or higher.
Joe's teaching philosophy centers on consistency, deliberate practice, and personalized support rather than memorization. Every student receives a tailored study plan, detailed feedback on their work, and regular mock testing to build both skill and confidence.

Academic Specialist and Curriculum Designer
Kathryn Evans is an Academic Specialist and Curriculum Designer at Spark English Center Vietnam, where she develops learning programs, teaches students across multiple levels, and helps shape the center’s educational approach. With extensive experience teaching young learners, Kathryn specializes in phonics instruction, literacy development, reading comprehension, and building strong communication skills through engaging, student-centered lessons.
At Spark, Kathryn plays a major role in designing structured curriculum materials that balance academic rigor with creativity and enjoyment. Her lessons are carefully planned to help students build confidence step by step while keeping them actively engaged in the learning process.
In addition to curriculum development, Kathryn works directly with students in the classroom, giving her valuable insight into the challenges children face and the teaching strategies that produce real progress. She is particularly skilled at creating supportive learning environments where students feel comfortable participating, making mistakes, and growing in confidence.

Sabrina (Ngoc) Du
Administrator and Admissions Director
Sabrina oversees Spark English Center Vietnam’s daily operations and manages the admissions process for new and returning families. As the first point of contact for many parents, she plays an important role in ensuring every family feels welcomed, informed, and supported throughout their experience at Spark.
From handling enrollment and scheduling to assisting with parent communication and student coordination, Sabrina helps keep the center running smoothly on a daily basis. She works closely with families to answer questions, provide guidance on class placement, and ensure students transition comfortably into their programs.
Known for her organized, approachable, and supportive nature, Sabrina is dedicated to creating a positive experience for both students and parents. Her attention to detail and commitment to clear communication help families feel confident and connected from their very first interaction with Spark.

Huong Nguyen
Billing and Administration
Huong manages Spark English Center Vietnam’s billing, payments, and administrative operations, helping ensure that day-to-day processes run smoothly for both students and families. She works closely with parents to assist with tuition payments, scheduling questions, enrollment documentation, and general administrative support.
Known for her reliability, responsiveness, and attention to detail, Huong helps families navigate the practical side of their child’s education with clarity and efficiency. Whether assisting with invoices, class schedules, or important paperwork, she is committed to providing prompt and helpful support to every family at Spark.

From First Sounds to University Ready
Spark offers four structured programs that together form a complete English learning pathway
Phonics and Early Literacy (Ages 3-7)
Systematic phonics instruction that teaches children to decode English from their very first sounds. Using Cambridge YLE-aligned materials (Fun for Starters, Movers, Flyers), we build the reading and spelling foundations that many international schools skip or rush through.
ESL Foundations (Ages 7-12)
For students building English from the ground up. This program moves learners from functional communication to academic readiness, with CEFR-aligned progression and balanced development across all four language skills.
Academic English (Ages 10-16)
Targeted support for students already in international or bilingual schools. We focus on reading comprehension, essay structure, grammar accuracy, and the critical thinking skills required by IB, Cambridge, and bilingual curricula.
IELTS Preparation (Ages 14+)
Led by Joe Evans, our IELTS program covers every band level from 4.5 to 9.0 across four structured stages: Entry, Intermediate, Advanced, and Elite. Over 95% of our IELTS students achieve Band 7.5 or higher.
